The difference between students who finish a level in 3 months and those who need six almost never comes down to ability. It’s a difference in habits between lessons. Here are five that actually work.
At least 10 minutes a day, not 2 hours once a week
The brain retains a language better through frequent contact than through rare marathons. 10 minutes of reviewing words every day beats one long session on the weekend.
Listen, even without understanding everything
Podcasts, shows, music in the language you’re learning — in the background, with no goal of catching every word. This trains your ear to the pace and melody of speech, and listening comprehension follows on its own.
- Speak out loud, even alone — say your thoughts in the language you’re learning
- Keep a short list of new words from real conversations, not from a textbook
- Don’t be afraid to make mistakes in class — that’s the safest place to make them
None of these habits takes more than 15 minutes a day — but together they create constant contact with the language instead of one-off bursts before class.
